INTRODUCTION
HEC has
taken substantial steps for the improvement in the standard of
higher education, status of universities, and research in
science and technology. As the present century is being tipped
as the century of biology with the completion of human genome
project, it is the biologists who can help to unravel the
mysteries of etiology of many diseases, in the development of
diagnostics and therapeutics and production of life saving drugs
and vaccines. The subject of Biology is taught in almost all
institutes of higher learning of Pakistan but the quality of
teaching as well as research in these institutions is far below
the international standards. For the remediation of this
existing scenario ministry of Science & Technology initiated a
program to bring about improvements in teaching and
research of basic sciences in the country. Top experts in
various basic science disciplines formed National Core Groups,
which were given the task of devising mechanisms to
bring about the improvements. Consequently a National Core
Group was constituted in Life Sciences vide letter
No.1(15)/Minster (S&T), dated January 17, 2002 under Convener
ship of Dr. Anwar Nasim, Advisor (Science) COMSTECH, Islamabad.
